RAG offer once-in-lifetime opportunities to some of the world's most amazing places. This year we are offering a range of amazing challenges to countries all over the world. Interested? Why not contact us for more information!*

*Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are unable to guarantee any international challenges taking place in the 21/22 academic year.

With Challenges Abroad

The volunteer project takes place in traditional Peruvian villages in the Sacred Valley where your help can make a real difference to struggling communities. You can also see the impact of our charity which is supporting the communities in which you are working. Whilst in Peru you will be working on community projects that take place in the Sacred Valley. Most recently, alongside teaching English students have introduced sports such as handball which the children loved! Bring your own hobbies with you and run afterschool sessions! This is an amazing opportunity to share with the children activities they haven’t been exposed to before and make a real impact on their childhood experiences!

The volunteering challenge is truly unique and will test your ability to communicate and to achieve goals as part of a team. The trek challenges your physical fitness at high altitude and the rewards are spectacular as you discover the mysterious ruins of the lost Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in the spectacular Andes Mountains. During this, you will undertake a 5-day trek across the Salkantay route (which offers a spectacular alternative to the oversubscribed Inca Trail.

Extension: Discover the best of the old and new Peru with free time to explore Lima, the City of Kings and modern day capital, and Cusco, the capital of the ancient Incan Empire and home to the spectacular Palace of Inca Roca.

With Challenges Abroad

Elephant Sanctuary

In Thailand elephants are often abused as working animals, in shows or for street begging, many ending up disabled, blind or orphaned. Elephant sanctuaries offer a safe haven for these majestic animals. It is important to note than many of these sanctuaries are secretly quite unethical.

That is why NUSU RAG have worked closely with Challenges Abroad to ensure that we avoid these sanctuaries. To this end, we have teamed up with the Elephant Nature Park, one of the only ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand - which also houses over 350 dogs saved from the 2011 Bangkok floods.

This park is  ran by the Lek Chailert, the world renowned conservationist and founder of the Save Elephant Foundation. Lek herself has been honoured by Hillary Clinton in 2010 as one of the six "Women Heroes of Conservation".

Hill-Tribe Village

Although Thailand is increasingly being seen as a developed destination, it still has many economic and cultural problems. Thailand faces many social issues and marginalised groups, particularly hill-tribes, who often don’t receive the support they need.

The hill-tribes villages are located in the most remote and beautiful locations, where no one else could take you! Every day these hill-tribes perpetuate ancestral traditions, wearing hand-made clothing, living in wooden houses and growing their own food. Volunteering in these villages is the opportunity of a life-time to experience a unique adventure while supporting underprivileged communities!

Extension: Koh Samui for 6 Days (Snorkelling, Island Tour, National Park)

Fundraising target: £1850

With East African Playgrounds

You’ll explore the natural beauty of the country over a five-day trek – trekking and canoeing across the lakes and foothills of western Uganda, you’ll experience every terrain the world has to offer. You’ll canoe across lakes, climb over mountains, trek through rainforest, and experience stunning scenery at every turn of the journey.

You’ll discover the last remaining wild silverback gorillas, feeling like an intrepid explorer as you walk paths no-one else has walked to find them. You’ll spend an hour in the company of the gentle giants, and contribute to the conservation of this critically endangered species by visiting.

You’ll develop a local community, by transforming an empty playing field into a safe, fun and exciting playground for children to enjoy for generations to come. Living and volunteering within a local community, you’ll help transform a community school by building an amazing new playground with a team of trained Ugandan builders and welders. You will also assist on our creative play programme to inspire children at a school to learn, explore and develop themselves.

Extension: Beyond that, you’ll have a few chances to take advantage of being in the ‘adventure capital’ of East Africa.

You’ll have opportunities to do anything from chilling in a hammock in an incredible campsite to bungee jumping over the mighty River Nile itself. You can quad bike or horse ride through local villages, raft or kayak to your heart’s content or even take a sunset tour through the source of the River Nile itself.
